Data Engineer (Filled/Closed)

​Working in the front office is not for everybody but you have already experienced it and love it or you know enough about working in finance to think you might. Working directly with traders requires a certain personality and an ability to think clearly under pressure.

The role here is for a data engineer or a backend software engineer to work in the commodities division of one of London’s oldest hedge funds.

Current team member Jeff is moving to NYC (he is staying with the business) and he needs you to step in and fill his seat in London.

You will join one other developer in the London office (and we do mean in the London office the team is in the office 3 days a week).

There is a lot of work to be done and the team is growing from 2 to 3 to help them cover the sometimes conflicting demands of supporting front-office systems as well as more strategic long-term software builds.

There is a big greenfield project to be delivered to completely reimagine the data platform for the commodities business. Data is the new oil is a cliche in the tech industry but in this instance data on the price of oil actually makes this business millions. They need to pull in real-time data from a number of disparate data sources and give careful thought to how the data is cleaned, stored, and presented to the people who use it to create trading models.

The work involves a mixture of working with a range of technologies. The existing pricing and risk systems are all written in C++ with a React front end. The data engineering work is mainly in Python and some of the other backend applications and infrastructure tasks involve working in Go. 

There is real scope here to help define how the data platform gets built. You will see your software directly improve the business's ability to operate in an incredibly fast-moving world and make smarter decisions more quickly thus continuing its longstanding track record of profitability.
